Choose an English class by the task you want to handle, your starting level and the time you can attend. A school, a private tutor and independent practice offer different arrangements; compare the actual syllabus and teaching format before comparing prices.
Start with the English you need to use
- Everyday communication: ask how the course combines speaking, listening, reading and writing. English Explorer’s General English course has a beginner-to-advanced route.
- Speaking practice: look at the Conversational English course if your main concern is using English in conversations. Tell the school which situations you find difficult.
- Work: compare the tasks in Business English with the emails, meetings or presentations you actually need to manage.
- An examination: choose the relevant preparation course rather than assuming a general conversation class covers the examination format. Check the course list with the school.
School, British Council or private tutor: what should you compare?
Ask each provider the same questions. What level is the class? What does a lesson include? Who teaches it? Is the timetable fixed, and what happens if you miss a lesson? How much does the complete arrangement cost, including materials and any registration charges?
A group class gives you classmates to practise with and a shared course structure. One-to-one tuition lets you discuss an individual goal and pace with the teacher. Neither format is automatically the right choice for every adult. British Council and other providers have their own current courses and terms: check those directly rather than assuming that a provider’s name tells you the class size, price or teaching format.
Match the level before you commit
Tell the school what you can already do in English and what you want to improve. Being able to read work documents does not necessarily mean you are comfortable speaking in meetings. Compare the whole arrangement, not one headline price
Check the number and length of sessions, whether lessons are in a group or one-to-one, and which materials are included. Ask for the current fee and the terms for the particular course you are considering. Do not assume that a promotion or funding statement applies to every course or every learner.
